Do you live abroad but dream of getting married in El Salvador? You are not alone. Many Salvadoran couples living overseas decide to return home to celebrate their big day surrounded by family, friends, and the magical landscapes our country offers. To help you stay on track, we put together this checklist especially for you.

1. Set the date and budget

This is the foundation of everything. Choose your date with vacations, flights, and the availability of guests traveling from abroad in mind. Create a realistic budget that includes airfare, accommodations, and extra costs for those who are traveling. Also consider local holidays in El Salvador, which may be different from where you currently live.

2. Book your venue early

In El Salvador, the most popular spaces, including churches and event venues, book up very quickly, sometimes a year or more in advance. Reserve as soon as possible to secure your dream location.

3. Hire a local wedding planner

If you live far away, a wedding planner in El Salvador will be your right hand. They will help you visit venues, coordinate vendors, negotiate pricing, and handle details you cannot manage from a distance. Even if you think you can do it all yourself, this will likely be your best investment.

4. If you plan to handle some things yourself, choose trusted vendors

Photographers, decorators, catering, music, everything matters. Use directories like Recolocal.com to find and compare reliable vendors. Ask for references and read reviews before making your decision.

Keep in mind that vendor workflows in El Salvador may differ from what you are used to, as many prefer communication via WhatsApp and request payments through direct bank transfers rather than credit cards.

5. Coordinate lodging and transportation

Think about your guests, many will be traveling from abroad. Some venues have limited hotel options nearby, so speak with them about blocking rooms and ask your guests to book early.

If you plan to offer transportation, you can either cover the cost or provide options so guests can coordinate it themselves.

If you or your partner is a foreign national wishing to legalize your marriage in El Salvador, confirm which documents or visas are required and what is needed for the marriage to be valid in the country where you live. Contact the local city hall or a local attorney well in advance.

Additionally, if you have guests visiting from abroad let them know in advance about any tourist visas or fees that may apply to them. Call your local consulate or visit the Migración & Extranjería website for the most up to date list of countries that require a visa or fee.

7. Details that make a difference

The bouquet, ceremony music, guest favors, every detail adds up. Make a list of these special touches so nothing is forgotten. Consider offering local goods or treats, such as traditional candies, traditional Salvadoran food or drinks.

8. If possible, visit before the wedding

A pre-wedding trip to taste the menu, try the drinks, see the décor in person, or meet the photographer can give you peace of mind. If that is not possible, ask your planner to send photos or connect with you via video call.

9. Create a day-of timeline

From the moment hair and makeup begin to the last dance, a detailed schedule helps everything flow smoothly and without stress. Ask your planner or vendors to guide you on things to consider you might not be aware of such as traffic patterns, national holidays, road closures, etc.

10. Enjoy the process

Planning from afar can be challenging, but it is also exciting. Trust your vendors, lean on family, and remember that the most important thing is celebrating love and enjoying the day surrounded by the people you care about most.
